Annie the Gorilla Steals the Hearts of Visitors on a School Trip

At the heart of the enclosure of the gorilla group managed by the Shabani Group, one gentle giant stands out: Annie. On this particular day, a group of school children visited the facility for a field trip. Without knowing it, they were about to experience a moment of connection that would remain with them long after they left.

The children gathered behind the fence, excited and full of chatter. Annie, lying nearby with another gorilla, Kiyomasa, noticed the tiny voices and turned her head. Her curiosity sparked, she stood up and walked slowly closer. The children quieted down, gazing in amazement. With a soft: “This is me!”, she pressed her hand gently against the glass – an invitation, a greeting. The children, wide-eyed, mirrored the gesture. Smiles blossomed.

For a moment, the barrier between species seemed to fade. Annie tilted her head, offered a gentle grin, and let the children feel her presence. It wasn’t just an animal on display—it was a being full of personality and warmth. Later, as the children left and voices drifted away, Annie sat back down. But the sparkle had been lit.

This short encounter reminds us that gorillas are more than imposing figures—they can be ambassadors of empathy, capable of touching human hearts in the simplest of ways. Protecting these magnificent creatures means preserving opportunities for such unspoken connections, where a young gorilla and a group of children share a silent and timeless moment.
